Demystifying Contemporary Art

A row of bricks lying on the floor. An artist sitting silently in a chair before a viewer. Art has taken on a baffling array of unfamiliar forms since the 1960s. It can seemingly be made with almost anything.

This course explores some of the stylistic movements in the art world in the past 50 years, including pop art, minimalism, conceptual art, arte povera, performance art, body art, land art, video and installation. We will also consider the ideas of postmodernism, institutional critique and relational aesthetics in order to explore new ways to relate to these challenging new forms.

During this three-week course, we will discover some of the major figures from this period, including Donald Judd, Eva Hesse, Joseph Kosuth, Piero Manzoni, Matthew Barney, Brian Jungen and Louise Bourgeois. In the last class, we will visit the contemporary art collection at the National Gallery of Canada.

Instructor

David Monkhouse has a long history at the National Gallery of Canada, where he has worked for over 20 years in various departments, including 20th Century international art, Canadian art and Education. A graduate in Visual Arts from the University of Ottawa, he also has an MA in Art History from the Université de Montréal. He has recently become the Chair of the Board of Trustees at Saw Gallery in Ottawa.
