How will I know if my application is accepted?

The University of Ottawa will review all applications. Successful applicants will be notified by October 8, 2018  for the November 2018 program.

What criteria are used to evaluate the applicants?

The program seeks professionals who demonstrate the potential to build their strategic capabilities to fuel communications through creative, imaginative and integrated solutions.

Do I have to work in the federal government to apply?

No. While the program is tailored to government and public/para-public sector communications professionals (e.g. associations, NGOs, not-for-profits, institutes), it would also be useful to those who work for the private sector.

Is this program only for senior level communicators?

No. The Institute for Strategic Communications & Change responds to the learning needs of mid-to senior level professionals across the following roles:

  • Communications directors, managers, officers
  • Human Resources directors, managers, officers with a mandate to support change
  • Change management professionals
  • Agents of change

Can more than one person apply from a particular department or office?

Yes.

How much does the program cost?

The comprehensive program (including intensive and interactive training, action learning, individual coaching, networking, practical work assignments, keynote speakers) is $5,500 (Plus HST). This amount can be paid as a lump sum on entry or in two payments (on acceptance and before the fourth training session).

Can I sign up for one or more workshops only?

No. The program is comprehensive and is delivered to a cohort of students.

Do I have to be bilingual to apply?

No. Workshops can be offered in French, English, or in a bilingual setting.

Does the program require a lot of time for assignments between sessions?

No. There will be a recommended article or video suggested at the end of each session, but there are no “homework” assignments. In fact, participants should find that they actually advance their work and priority files during the sessions which are designed around the concept that the learning is the work. The curriculum has been created with a focus on applied learning and ease of implementation into day-to-day work.

I have taken Results Map training from Caroline in the past. Will that be repetitive to the course offering at the Institute?

No. The Results Map process for communications and change planning is included in the curriculum, but the Institute material is 90% new material.

What makes this program different?

The Institute for Strategic Communications & Change is quite unique. In fact, based on our research, it is the only program of its kind in the world that offers a leadership-level program that specifically explores strategic communications, change management, and the intersection between those areas – change communications.

How does the program differ from what’s offered at the Canada School of Public Service?

The University of Ottawa Institute was developed in part as a result of consultation with the Canada School of Public Service. The University’s continuing education program has consulted with the Canada School in an effort to design complementary programs that do not overlap with the School’s programming.

The Canada School features some introductory courses in change management with a focus on webinars but has no equivalent in-depth leadership program that explores strategic communications and change management.

How is this program different than the Prosci Certification?

The Prosci certification is a 3-day program focused on change management.

The University of Ottawa ISCC is a 6-day program that includes change management as well as strategic communications, and a particular focus on the specialized field of change communications. The Institute leads to a uOttawa Certificate in Strategic Communications and Change. It also has an increased focus on applied learning based on participants’ own priority files.

The instructor of the Institute program is certified in the Prosci methodology.
